Sicilian shrew


The Sicilian shrew is a species of mammal in the family Soricidae. It is found in Sicily and Gozo. Its natural habitat is temperate shrubland.

Subspecies

Four subspecies of the Sicilian shrew are found:

''Crocidura sicula'' ssp. ''calypso''

The species that is found on the island of Gozo has recently been defined as a different subspecies.

''Crocidura sicula'' ssp. ''sicula''

This subspecies is native to the island of Sicily.

''Crocidura sicula'' ssp. ''aegatensis''

This subspecies is found only on the Aegadian Islands.

''Crocidura sicula'' ssp. ''esuae''

This subspecies is known as fossil form from the Middle Pleistocene of Sicily.
