Political timeline

Simarjeet Bains started his career as an independent member of the Punjab Legislative Assembly. Along with his brother, Balwinder Singh Bains, he established the Lok Insaaf Party and made an alliance with the Aam Aadmi Party for the 2017 Punjab Legislative Assembly election. Simarjeet Singh Bains also contested as an independent candidate from Ludhiana in 2014 general elections and gathered 2,10,917 votes. They left the AAP alliance in March 2018 following AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal issuing a public apology to Bikram Majithia, having earlier accused him of being the kingpin of the illegal drug trade in Punjab. In December 2018, Lok Insaaf Party along with Punjab Ekta Party, Bahujan Samaj Party and Punjab Front formed the Punjab Democratic Alliance, which will contest the 2019 Indian general election in Punjab on all 13 Lok Sabha seats.

Controversy

On 24 December 2016, Bains and a group of men lifted the toll barrier at the Ladhowal Toll Plaza, allowing people to drive through the toll without paying, after complaining that he had been waiting for 30 minutes to pass through the toll.
Bains is well known for creating ruckus and chaos in public offices. In September 2019, he violated the sanctity of a public office by storming into the office of Deputy Commissioner and used derogatory remarks against the IAS Officer Vipul Ujwal. He also tried to intimidate the young and highly respected IAS officer. Trying to protect the sanctity and decorum of the public office, the Deputy Commissioner requested Bains and his comrades to leave the office and made it clear that he won't deal with him under such intimidation. Later, Bains has been booked under Sections 186, 353, 451, 147, 177, 505, 506 of the IPC on a complaint filed by Batala SDM Balbir Raj Singh. Most of the offences are non-bailable.
During the April 2020 Patiala incident a goon dressed as Nihang Sikh chopped off the hand of ASI Harjeet Singh - who was on his COVID duty. At this instance Bains showed no empathy towards the officer - Harjeet Singh - who was on the verge of dying, rather he supported the terrorising act of the goon. Due to the derogatory remarks used by Bains and in order to keep up the morale of Punjab Police during testing times of COVID, Bains' security was withdrawn at this instance. The Nihang Sikh was later caught with a huge repository of arms and ammunition.
Amidst these instances, it is often said that even though Bains is a public representative, yet he has criminal tendencies and believes in nothing but creating ruckus and anarchy.

Personal life

Bains's brother Balwinder Singh Bains is also an Independent member of the Punjab Legislative Assembly.
