Single territorial collectivity

A single territorial collectivity is a chartered subdivision of France that exerts both the powers of a region and a department.
This status has been introduced in Mayotte in 2011, in Guiana and Martinique in 2015, and in Corsica in 2018. Alsace will become a European Collectivity in 2021.
The nature of a French single territorial collectivity is set forth in Article 72 of the French Constitution of 1958, which provides for local autonomy within limits prescribed by law.
