Sports activity coupe

A sports activity coupé is an automotive body-style consisting of a traditional sedan or gran turismo body placed on top of the platform of a sport-utility vehicle.

History

The BMW X6, introduced in 2008, is widely considered to be the first sports activity coupé. Based on the BMW X5, the X6 was essentially a sedan on stilts, riding on the X5's platform. The vehicle's polarizing styling generated some controversy early on and it had less cargo space and a higher price, but the body style proved to be popular with tens of thousands being sold annually.
SACs are becoming an increasingly popular body type, especially in markets with a booming SUV industry. Many customers buy SACs wanting an increased ride-height, off-roadability, and on-road performance when compared to traditional sedans and SUVs.
