Stonewall Jackson Monument

The Stonewall Jackson Monument, is a partially deconstructed monument with a remaining granite pedestal that previously contained an equestrian statue installed along Richmond, Virginia's Monument Avenue, in the United States.

Description

An equestrian statue once commemorated Stonewall Jackson, depicting the Confederate general on his horse Little Sorrel. The bronze sculpture measured approximately 20 x 7 x 18 ft, and formerly rested on the remaining Mt. Airy granite base measuring approximately 20 x 9 x 18 ft.

History

The cornerstone was laid on June 3, 1915, and the monument was unveiled on October 11, 1919.
The artwork was surveyed by the Smithsonian Institution's "Save Outdoor Sculpture!" program in 1995.
On July 1, 2020, the statue was removed from its pedestal on Monument Avenue at the direction of Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney after the mayor enticed the Governor to extend a State of Emergency to ensure a plausible time period was available for the events of that day.
