Sumy State University is a higher educational institution, located in the Sumy, Ukraine.

Introduction

Sumy State University is a powerful higher educational institution of the Sumy region of the IV level of accreditation. The University currently serves about 14,000 students who are pursuing prebachelor, bachelor, specialist and master degrees in 55 majors and 23 fields of knowledge. About 1750 foreign students represent almost 50 countries worldwide.
The university comprises the following educational institutes: Medical Institute, Oleg Balatskyi Academic and Research Institute of Finance, Economics and Management, Academic and Research Institute of Business Technologies "UAB", Academic and Research Institute of Law, Konotop and Shostka Institutes, Chemical and Technological College of Shostka Institute; faculties: of Electronics and Information Technologies, Foreign Philology and Social Communications, Technical Systems and Energy Efficient Technologies, Industrial Pedagogical Technical School of Konotop Institute, Polytechnic School of Konotop Institute, Chemical and Technological College of Shostka Institute and other structural departments.
There are more than 3000 employees in the university, including Corresponding Members of the National Academy of Science of Ukraine, about 130 Doctors of Sciences, Professors and 660 Candidates of Sciences, Associate Professors represent academic staff of the University. There are postgraduate and post-doctoral programmes in 21 majors, degree awarding academic councils.
The University holds the highest position among Ukrainian higher education institutions for the number of prize-winning places in All-Ukrainian competitions of students’ research works and is among leaders in All-Ukrainian Olympiads in educational disciplines, training directions and majors.
Advanced library information system contains over 3,1 million items both in hard copies and e-copies and provides access to the most famous electronic databases of the world. The University’s library is a prize winner of All-Ukrainian contest “Library of the Year”. Web of Science Core Collection database indexes the University’s two scientific journals such as “Marketing and Management of Innovations” and “Nanomaterials: Applications and Properties”. The letter one and “Journal of Nano- and Electronic Physics” are also indexed by SCOPUS database.
There are TOEFL-center, resource and educational centers of Microsoft, Cisco, PortaOne, Delcam, Netcracker, 1С, Siemens, SAS, MindK and other companies operating at SumDU campus.
40 kinds of sports and about 100 sports groups are available at the University. Sports teams perform at the premier league level. About 100 students are the record breakers and prize winners of the Olympic Games, World, European and Ukrainian Championships.
The students of the university have an opportunity to develop and improve their skills in 16 clubs in accordance with their interests. There are vocal, instrumental, jazz ensembles, rock bands, dance clubs, drama groups, theater of variety miniatures, folk ensembles, literary and creative workshop and others.

History

Creation of a higher educational institution of a polytechnical type in Sumy is connected with the development of the Sumy Machine-Building Plant named after M.V. Frunze. At that time, most of the engineering and management positions were occupied by specialists with secondary specialized education. That is why, in February 1948, the joint order of the Union ministries of higher education, machine-building and instrument-making provided the conditions for the creation at the factory of a training and consulting center of Moscow correspondence institute of small-scale industry. The next step towards the real establishment of an educational institution was an order within Sumy Machine-Building Plant named after M.V. Frunze, July 30, 1948.
This order became an exact starting point of the educational institution’s history. The head of the TCC was the graduate of the Teachers' Institute, veteran of the war, deputy head of the staff department of the enterprise V. I. Popov.
The first enrollment for the first year took place in August 1948.
In 1958 due to organization process of Ukrainian distant polytechnic institute, TCC was transferred to its structure.
In May 1960 Sumy General Technical Faculty of UDPI was created on the basis of TCC.
In 1966 Sumy General Technical Faculty was reorganized into Sumy department of Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute. O.H Inozemtseva was appointed to the post the first director of the branch.
Since March 15, 1972, the director of the branch, subsequently – the rector of Sumy Institute of Physics and Technology, and since 1993 till 2004 I.H. Kovalev worked as the rector of Sumy State University. Under his leadership, the KhPI department had turned into a modern educational institution with a wide range of scientific and educational activities, developed infrastructure, an in-depth humanitarian component, which then became the basis for the establishment of a classical university.
In 1981, the departments were transferred from "Khimprom" 2 buildings of technical school number 1.
In 1984 the building process was over. The main 14-storey educational-administrative building was put into operation; in 1988 – the central building; in 1989 - 4th building of the library.
In 1990 the appropriate conditions for transforming the department into HEI of engineering-technical direction with the ideology of the priority of the fundamental component of training specialists.
By the Resolution of the Council of Ministers of the Ukrainian SSR №299 dated 08.10.1990, Sumy Institute of Physics and Technology was established on the basis of the Sumy branch of KhPI.
In 1992 the first medical students were enrolled.
With the Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine № 646 of 13.08.1993 on the basis of SFTI Sumy State University was established. Since August 17, 2004 the university is headed by prof. Anatolyi V. Vasylyev, who since 1978 worked as the first deputy director of the department, the first vice rector of the SIPT, SumDU.
In 2014, the university ranked fourth among the universities of Ukraine in the TOP-700 universities of the world, in accordance with one of the most prestigious QS world rankings, which identified Sumy State University in the group of leaders in the Ukrainian educational and scientific space.
On 23 December 2015 with the resolution of Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine №1388-r, the Ukrainian Academy of Banking was reorganized by joining SSU.
In 2016-2018 the university strongly entered the group of leaders of the Ukrainian scientific and educational space, according to the most famous international QS, Times, Shanghai rankings as a higher education institution with a high scientific constituent.

International relations

SSU is a member of Magna Charta Universitatum, International Association of Universities, European University Association, Eurasian Association of Universities.
It has close international relations with leading university and scientific organizations in Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Germany, Slovenia and Russia.
Annually SSU carries out about 400 scientific agreements, contracts and carries out over 70 international grants. SSU activity directs to the integration into scientific and education sphere. SSU has about 100 partners and about 1240 foreign students, academic mobility, active scientific development cooperation with foreign universities, associations and funds, program of dual diplomas with European institutions of higher education.

Science

Scientific activity at the Sumy State University is related with:
  1. Fundamental investigations in physics and mathematics.
  2. Production and optimization of: innovatory workflows, progressive methods of material processing, automatic lines, equipment, machines and tools for engineering industry.
  3. Ecological problems of the applied chemistry. Elaboration of progressive technology and equipment for chemical industry.
  4. Environmental ecological and economic problems and its protection.
  5. Elaboration of simulators, methods and algorithms of the processes of designing and optimization of complex systems.
  6. Investigation of immunity peculiarities of children, which live in environmentally unfavorable terrains.
