Sunbury, Georgia


Sunbury is an unincorporated community in Liberty County, in the U.S. state of Georgia.

History

Sunbury was founded in 1758, and named after Sunbury, England, the native home of a first settler. Variant names were "Sunbery" and "Sunbury Landing". A post office was established at Sunbury in 1793, and remained in operation until 1841.
Sunbury was incorporated as a town in 1791. Sunbury served as the county seat of Liberty County from 1784 until the seat was transferred to Riceborough in 1797.
