Surrey United Firefighters

Surrey United Firefighters is a Canadian soccer team based in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada. The club was founded as part of a merger in 2008 and play in the Pacific Coast Soccer League. They previously played in the Vancouver Metro Soccer League.

History

The current team was formed in 2008 as a result of a merger between Surrey United and Vancouver Firefighters.

Surrey United

Surrey United was one of the largest soccer clubs in the province with 1700 youth and mini players, and ten men's and three women's adult teams in 2011.
Founded in 1983, Surrey United Men's Soccer Club was an adult club consisting of two teams that played in the Fraser Valley Soccer League until 1998. They established a dynasty as league champions of the Premier Division in 1992 and four consecutive Premier and First Division Championships, two President Cup wins, a Pakenham Cup win and in 1998 lost 2–1 in extra-time in the final of the British Columbia Provincial Soccer Championship for the Province Cup.
In 1994 the adult club merged with a youth club and the name Surrey United Soccer Club included a full youth system as well as adult teams.
In 1996 they put a summer team in the Pacific Coast Soccer League, a national amateur league at the fourth tier of the American Soccer Pyramid that played until 2009.
In 1998 the Vancouver Metro Soccer League and Fraser Valley Soccer League allowed the club an expansion franchise directly into the top division of the VMSL. Part of the reason was to prevent VMSL teams from recruiting players from Surrey playing in the FVSL. Subsequent clubs have not been allowed expansion franchises and the clubs have merged with VMSL clubs or broken up.

Vancouver Firefighters

The Vancouver Firefighters were founded in the 1950s after the second world war. They interchanged between playing in the Mainland League and the old Pacific Coast League in that first decade, winning the Pacific Coast League title in 1954-55. They also won the BC Soccer Province Cup in 1954, 1955, and 1957.
After winning the Mainland League title in 1960-61, they rejoined the Pacific Coast League and won four league championships in the next five years. Through the 1960s, they also won three Pacific Coast League playoff titles, five Anderson Cups, and five BC Province Cup provincial titles.
In 1962 the Vancouver Firefighters defeated a Mexican national select team at Wrigley Field, Chicago to win the Pacific Coast International Championship for the J. F. Kennedy Trophy. They were runners-up in 1965 and won it again in 1966.
The Firefighters were national The Challenge Trophy winners four times: in 1965, 1973, 1983 and 1990. Beyond their first eight provincial titles in the 1950s and 1960s, they won the Province Cup again in 1973, 1983, 1990, and 1998.
In 2008 the premier division team merged with Surrey United and the masters or O35 team merged with the Coquitlam Metro-Ford Soccer Club.
