Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah


Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah is an Indian Hindi language television sitcom. One of India's longest running television shows, it is produced by Neela Tele Films. The show went on air on 28 July 2008. It airs from Monday to Friday on SAB TV. Reruns of the show started on Sony Pal from 2 November 2015.
The show is based on the column Duniya Ne Undha Chashma written by columnist, writer and journalist/playwright Taarak Mehta for the Gujarati weekly magazine Chitralekha.

Summary

The series takes place at the Gokuldham Co-operative Housing Society, an apartment complex in Powder Gali, Goregaon East, Mumbai around Gada Family which consists of a successful businessman Jethalal Champaklal Gada, his father Champaklal Jayantilal Gada, his wife Daya and their naughty son Tipendra "Tapu" Gada who is the leader of his friend circle called "Tapu Sena."
Jethalal calls his father Champaklal to keep an eye on Tapu but the opposite happens and he joins hands with Tapu. Most of the episodes are based on Jethalal being stuck in a problem and Taarak Mehta, his best friend, helps him out of it whom Jethalal calls "Fire Brigade."
The show covers topical issues which are socially relevant. The residents of Gokuldham faces daily life problems and finds solutions for it but with a moral value too in a hilarious manner. Although Gokuldham Society consists of 17 flats but the show mostly focuses on the lives of the families, that are of; Jethalal Champaklal Gada, a Gujarati; Taarak Mehta, who is a Gujarati writer; Aatmaram Tukaram Bhide, who belongs to Marathi culture; Dr. Hansraj Hathi, a Bihari overweight doctor; Krishnan Iyer, a scientist from Chennai but has a Bengali wife; Roshan Singh Sodhi, a Punjabi but has a Parsi wife and Patrakaar Popatlal Panday, a bachelor journalist from Bhopal. They always help each-other in their problems, to promote Unity in Diversity.

Main characters

The shooting happens in film city, Mumbai. In past some parts of the show have also been shot for that times storyline in places such as Gujarat, New Delhi, Goa and in overseas locations such as London, Brussels, Paris, Hong Kong and Singapore.
From March to June 2020, filming shut down in wake of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The show started broadcasting its new episodes from 22 July 2020 at 8:30 pm
On it completing 1000 episodes on 6 November 2012, Asit Kumarr Modi revealed that it took eight years for him to get this show on air. Further he said, “Originally, it was a column in a Gujarati magazine and I bought its rights in 2001. I approached every channel, but the trend of daily soaps had just started and saas-bahu shows were dominating the scene. Whoever I approached said there was no scope for comedy everyday. But I had a feeling that one day comedies, too, would become a daily trend. Finally in 2008, Taarak Mehta... came on air.”
In February 2015, Joshi, Vakani, and Lodha hosted the red carpet at the 60th Britannia Filmfare Awards to promote the Clean India campaign.

Reception

In the first week of 2017, the show stood in fourth position with 6,004 TVT ratings. In the fourth week, the show entered the top five and stood in the fifth position with 6,059 TVT ratings. In March 2017, the show remained within the top five shows urban rural metrics. In the 25th week of 2017, the show stood at the top spot with 6,092 TVT ratings. In the 26th week of 2017, the show stood at third spot with 6,049 TVT ratings. It is the longest-running scripted show on Indian television. In the 1st week of 2018, the show topped the chart with 6961 TVT ratings.
In the 42nd week of 2019 the show stood at first position with 7952 TVT ratings.
Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Culture and National Heritage, Piotr Glinski visited the sets of Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah in February 2016.

Adaptions

The series has been dubbed in Telugu which is broadcast on ETV Plus as ‘Tarak Mama Ayyo Rama’ as well as in Marathi which is broadcast on 'Fakt Marathi ' TV channel as Gokuldhamchi Duniyadaari.

Crossovers and special episodes

In 2010 the cast of Khichdi made a special appearance to promote their film .
Special episodes Anand Ka Safar to pay tribute to Rajesh Khanna aired in July 2012 in which the cast members danced on Khanna's songs.
Crossover episodes with C.I.D. named as Mahasangam aired July 2014 in which CID visits Gokuldham Society to solve a case.
