Tarbiat Modares University was established in 1982 as the first post revolution graduate school, in the Islamic Republic of Iran. The meaning of TMU in Farsi implicates its main objective which is to serve as an institute for training university professors. One of the main constituents of TMU is Faculty of Basic Sciences which was originally composed of Departments of Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics, and Physics. Rapid growth was brought about through rather high student enrolment, increase in the number of faculty members, and agglomeration of research facilities. As a result, Departments of Biology, Mathematics, and Top Technologies formed their own corresponding Colleges. Hence, at this time FBS only includes Departments of Chemistry, Geology and Physics. The Chemistry Department has 16 full-time faculty members who are active in 4 major areas: Analytical, Inorganic, Organic, and Physical Chemistry. The Geology Department has 12 full-time faculty members who work in 4 major areas: Economic, Geology, Engineering Geology, Petrology, and Tectonics. The Physics Department has 9 full-time faculty members, active in 3 major areas: Atomic and Molecular Physics, Condense phase, and Particle Physics.
Faculty of Biological Sciences
Following the establishment of Tarbiat Modares University in 1361, educational and research activities related to life sciences began with three members of the faculty in plant sciences and genetics groups in 1366. Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics were added to this category in 1367 and then Department of Biology was formed into four groups consists of plant sciences, genetics, biochemistry and biophysics in 1372. Nanobiotechnology field was also added to this category in 1386. Department of Biology was added to the Faculty of Biological Sciences in 1388.Faculty of Chemical Engineering
Faculty of Chemical Engineering at Tarbiat Modares University was established in 1983. The Faculty of Chemical Engineering has 32 faculty members who are working in 6 departments of this faculty including Chemical Engineering-Process, Petroleum Engineering, Polymer Engineering, Polymerization Processes Engineering, Biotechnology Engineering, and Biomedical Engineering. Likewise, the faculty is known as the applied scientific hub for biotechnology and hydrocarbon processes across the country. A total number of 462 students are studying in Faculty of Chemical Engineering.Faculty of Civil & Environmental Engineering
The Faculty of Civil & Environmental Engineering offers a variety of M.Sc. and Ph.D. degree programs. Each program offers a challenging mix of class work, lab work, and research. Master of Science program is a versatile program, suitable for students who intend to launch a career in academia, and also for those who want to get a position working for an engineering firm.Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering
The Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Tarbiat Modares University provides for specialization in MSc and PhD levels for two decades in many areas including biomedical engineering, computer engineering, communications, control, electronics, power systems, and also, inter-departmental efforts include joint curriculum development in IT Engineering offered in collaboration with Industrial Eng. Department in Faculty of Engineering. The ECE Faculty has strong research ties with industry and has significantly increased its collaborations and joint planning activities in recent years. These interactions support departmental research efforts, and provide graduate students with relevant experience with leading-edge technology. Departmental facilities include more than twenty research laboratories featuring state-of-the-art equipment that is continually updated through both university investments and external grant support. This Faculty has obtained several strategic grants for developing research laboratories in Optoelectronics, VLSI, satellite communications, and power systems.
The ECE Faculty graduate programs aim to develop an understanding of the scientific basis of critical technologies, and prepare students to apply state-of-the-art analysis and design methods to integrated electronics, Optoelectronics, control, communications, computer systems, biomedical engineering, and software and hardware engineering problems. PhD and M.Sc degrees are offered.
