Thakur College of Science and Commerce is an educational institute located in Kandivali, Mumbai in the State of Maharashtra, India which was established by Thakur Educational Trust in the year 1992. It is now an autonomous college which means that it exercises independent control over its day-to-day operations and curriculum. It is generally associated with universities or institutions and implies that the sponsoring state does not have control over academic matters of the college.
History
Thakur College of Science and Commerce was established by Thakur Education Trust in 1992 to serve the needs of students passing SSC examination from the schools around Kandivali area and its vicinity. The establishment began with one division of FYJC Commerce accommodating just 57 students. It expanded in the year 1997 with FYJC Science and degree programs in the stream of science and commerce. The college has been granted minority status whereby 50% of the seats are reserved for Hindi speaking linguistic minority as per G. R. NO. ASN 1099/Lang MASHI-3 dated 1 October 1994. Thakur College of Science and Commerce was reaccredited with Grade 'A' by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council, an Autonomous Institution of the University Grants Commission The college now has more than 15000 students, 225 teaching staff and 150 non-teaching staff in degree and junior college together. It offers courses at primarily the higher secondary and under-graduate levels. The courses at the undergraduate and post-graduate level are offered in affiliation with Mumbai University, Mumbai. Considering the growth of the institute, the management has invested in infrastructure facilities including ICT enabled AC classrooms, Laboratories, Central Library, R&D center, and Indoor Gymkhana and also offers a media lab for media students. Thakur College of Science and Commerce is presently offering need-based self-financing programmes like BMM, BMS, BAF, BBI, B.SC.-Biotech, B.Sc. Computer Science, B.Sc.-IT and B.Sc.-Aviation at undergraduate levels besides B.Sc. and B.Com. The institute also offers postgraduate programmes in Chemistry-Inorganic and Organic, Computer Science, Information Technology and M.Com. It is also recognized as P.hd centre for Chemistry.
