The Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management


The Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management in Dubai is a hospitality management school and part of the hotel company, Jumeirah Group. It is a provider of university-level hospitality business education and offers both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. EAHM works in academic association with Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne and all programmes of study are accredited by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in the United Arab Emirates, the Institute of Hospitality in the United Kingdom and THE-ICE in Australia. It is a higher education member of the Council of International Schools.

History

The academy was established in 2001. The EAHM academic association with Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne in Switzerland ensures the quality of all the study programmes offered. As a part of the Jumeirah Group which manages numerous luxury hotel properties, students are able to gain first-hand experience through internships and building relationships with people in the industry. EAHM also works closely with other international hotel chains. With the Jumeirah Hotel Group as one of the principle partners, Dubai won its bid for the World Expo 2020. The staging of the world fair and the preparations leading are up to it are expected to result in 277,000 new jobs in the UAE, an injection of nearly $40 billion into the economy, and an increase in visitors of at least 25 million and up to 100 million.
The academy has hosted annual EuroChrie academic conferences in 2008 and 2014, Nestlé cooking events, and the prize-giving and award ceremony of The Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding. Guest lecturers such as Michel Roux, Ken Hom, Gary Rhodes, Jean-Christophe Novelli and Ainsley Harriott have hosted events in the Emirates Academy's Auditorium. John Cleese has visited the academy to talk to the students about his experiences in hospitality from a consumer's perspective.

Profile

The academy is a hotel school which is home to 320 students from 60 nationalities. In September 2015, the school enrolled more than 110 students from 37 countries, a record since its birth in 2001. In 2014, across all three intakes the school enrolled 90 undergraduates and 15 post-graduates.
It is one of the United Arab Emirates internationally accredited hospitality-specialised higher education institutions. Its curriculum encompasses all facets of general business management with a focus on hospitality management. The faculty at EAHM consists of 15 full-time faculty members who are responsible for academic guidance and development of students. A number of them are recognised figures and specialists in their chosen disciplines and most have either a Master or Doctoral degree coupled with numerous years of industry experience.

The Professional Training & Development department offers Certifications for hospitality industry professionals. Most Certification sequences are composed of 1 to 5 full-day courses. Certifications may be earned in Financial Management; Food, Beverage, and Restaurant Management; Customer Service; Marketing; Operations Management, Project Management; or Human Resources. The Professional Training and Development department of The Emirates Academy is also partnered with the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute as well as WSET Global. Industry professionals are therefore able to pursue continuing education and obtain internationally recognised certifications.

Institution, faculty and student awards

2013: BID International Star for Leadership in Quality
The Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management was named a winner of the BID 2013 International Star for Leadership in Quality Award in the Gold category in Paris; a trophy presented to companies and organizations from around the world that best adhere to excellence and innovation.
2013: Taste New Zealand Chef Competition
A student at the Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management won first place in the Taste New Zealand Chef Competition which named her ‘Champion Chef’.
2013: Dilmah Real High Tea Challenge
The Director of Culinary Arts, Chef Michael Kitts and Mr Haresh Mohinani won The Dilmah Real High Tea Challenge, after winning the Gold Medal in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
2012: Dubai Quality Appreciation Program Award, United Arab Emirates
The Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management was awarded the Dubai Quality Appreciation Program Award.

Admission requirements

The Emirates Academy offers diplomas up to an BBA or MBA to students from the age of 18. All the courses, with the exception of languages are taught in English. An advanced level of English is required. The Academy also offers internal TOEFL/EFL courses to the participants to help prepare them for full-time study in English.

For the undergraduate students, after completion of the first year, they are given the opportunity to partake in a 6-month internship either within Dubai, or Internationally.
