Plot

Leading up to the birth of their first child, Albert and Rose Poe buy a house. Seven years later, around the one year anniversary of their deaths and birthdays of both daughters, Addie and Jade, the family is mourning their loss. Albert is ready to move on, but Rose is still stuck in her grief, baking a birthday cake for the girls and speaking of them in present tense. The couple fights when Rose doesn't want to return to her job as a school teacher.
Concerned, Albert calls Dr. Connor, whom Rose has been seeing for a few months. Rose tells Dr. Connor about the things she's been experiencing in the house, like seeing toys move and the girls talking to her, which he assures her is normal. Rose goes on to mention finding a manuscript about demons in the attic, which causes Dr. Connor to want to leave abruptly, telling her they should sell the house because he senses something bad there. Rose researches the former owner of the home, Jack Wilson, and finds newspaper archives about suspicious activity in the house.
Albert asks a neighbor, Scott, who has lived in the neighborhood since 1970, about their house over the years, and he declines to answer. Albert calls the realtor, Fred, and lists the house for sale. Rose tells Albert about the manuscript, which he chalks up to religious propaganda. Later, he finds a disturbing tape recording of the girls on the day they died. The girls were coaxed up on a ladder to the roof by an unseen entity. Albert came to check on them, and discovered their bodies on the ground.
Rose and Albert pray to free any spirits or demons in the house. They find an elderly woman, Nebula, in their home who knows their names and says she was a friend of Jack Wilson's. Nebula tells them they should've done research on the house, and that if they had, their girls would still be alive. Albert orders her to leave and she cuts his face with a knife, saying nothing can save them now. Albert wakes up in the middle of the night to find Rose in the attic in a trance-like state brushing a doll's hair saying that Albert never loved them or made them a priority.
Nebula shows up in Fred's office, where it becomes known he is in on the plan to push the Poe's out of their home and Fred tells Nebula to back off to let things play out the way they're supposed to. Dr. Connor goes to the house to talk with Albert. He says that he did some research and the death date of his girls is celebrated as a holiday for abductions and human sacrifice on the satanic calendar. Dr. Connor discovered that the man who built the house, Donovan Peebles, wrote under the pseudonym of Jack Wilson. Donovan used that date as the opposite of its intent by riding his body of demons by killing two girl scouts in the house 25 years prior to the death of the Poe girls.
Dr. Connor and Albert find Rose in the girls' room where a demon has possessed her and she threatens them with a knife, telling them to get out. Albert manages to subdue her and get her out of the room, while Dr. Connor stays behind and hears the girls' voices. Rose and Albert argue about leaving the house as Rose insists on staying. Albert finds a drawing of the girls killing them and he decides for them to leave without even packing when they see a knife-wielding child at the door.
Albert goes to get his gun and discovers Dr. Connor's dead body in the shower. Rose talks Albert into putting the gun down as they try to escape the house, saying the girls would never hurt them. Rose finds a drawing like the one Albert found, and they see the girls at every window as they try to leave. The girls capture them and tie them up in the backyard. The girls tell Albert to say what really happened when they died, and it is revealed that Albert killed them by breaking their necks. Rose, now possessed, stabs Albert to death. Fred shows the home to another family with two daughters, saying the house became too much for the previous owners.
