Theni Government Medical College and Hospital was established in the year 2004 to facilitate adequate and easy medical facilities to the people of southern Tamil Nadu. Theni district, is located in the foothills of Western Ghats. Basically rural based and due to its proximity, the hospital caters to the needs of a major rural population of the states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. It is also a tertiary referral centre for the region bordering Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The district has beautiful green landscape having agriculture as its prime background.
History
The foundation for Government Theni Medical College was laid on 16 August 2002 by then Chief Minister Dr. J. Jayalalitha. The first hospital and college premises were inaugurated on 8 December 2004. The college premises includes Faculty block, 600 bedded hospital, Casualty block, Administrative block, Examination hall, Central library, Lecture Hall, Blood Bank, Mortuary, Auditorium, Nursing school, Quarters for Dean, RMO, ARMO, Professors, Asst. Professors, Residents, Nurses and staffs, Separate hostels for Boys, girls and CRRI, Gymnasium, Post office, Cafeteria, Bank and Gas plant. Medical college was started in the year 2006 with 100 seats for MBBS approved by Medical Council of India and it continues by admitting 100 students every year. DMLT, Nursing and 8 other Para Medical Courses are also being conducted by this institution. The college faculties have published many research papers in national and international journals and organized conferences, workshops, Training programmes, seminars and CMEs.
Location
The College is situated in Madurai-Theni highway 9 km from Theni and 7 km from Aundipatty. Vaigai dam is very closer to the college at a distance of 5 km. The College is surrounded by a pleasant, calm and breezy environment for students’ studies.
Admission is through counselling conducted by the university on the basis of neet mark. A separate fifteen percent is reserved as the "All India" quota through which candidates are admitted on basis of neet marks. The annual intake is 100 students.
The facility includes a 900-bed multi-speciality hospital with an outpatient ward. Hospital block is a 4 floored building. Each department has a separate ward. There are five lecture halls with total seating capacity of 720 and an auditorium which accommodate 700 people. University exams are conducted in a separate examination block.
Central Library
The Theni Govt. Medical College Library provides good informative support to different academic activities of students, faculties and health personnel involved in learning and research to meet their expectations in a user-friendly manner. The central library has a collection to 7004 documents on curriculum based medical and health topics of interest. Books, Periodical publications, Monographs, General reference collections, Medical reference materials, Reports, Proceedings and Statistical information form the major collections of documents. Non conventional documents such as Television, DVD players, CD, DVD and video cassettes etc. are special access to scholarly information with effective technical communication on experimental basis. Four reading rooms available. There are 6931 books available including 4799 reference books, 2132 textbooks, and many Indian and foreign journals.
Hostel facility
UG Boys and Girls have separate hostel with 86 rooms each with the capacity of 248 students each with a mess. Interns & PG Boys and Girls have separate hostel with 50 rooms each with the capacity of 100 students each with a mess. Nurses have a separate hostel
Student council
The college has an active student council which has regular meetings with the dean. It also helps to maintain a healthier relationship between students and professors and also between students.
