Thomas Gowland Phillips
Thomas Gowland was an English merchant and auctioneer. He was the owner of the first auction house in the Argentine territory, established around the year 1828 in the city of Buenos Aires.Biography
He was born in London, the second son of Thomas Gowland and Sarah Phillips. In 1812 he arrived in the city of Buenos Aires in the company of his family. The Gowland's established their home and warehouse on the street Reconquista, located a few meters from the Plaza de la Victoria in San Nicolas neighborhood.
He was married by catholic rite on 8 May 1827 in the parish of Nuestra Señora de Montserrat to Saturnina Gestal, born in Montevideo, daughter of José Gestal and Juana Gonzalez, belonging to a distinguished family of Creole roots.
He was a highly respected merchant from Buenos Aires in the days of Juan Manuel de Rosas. In this city, Thomas Gowland opened the Gowland & Co, an export and import company of manufactured products. His Company had a strong commercial relationship with the United States, country from which he had imported a great quantity of products to Buenos Aires.Gallery
