Toronto Falcons (NSL)


Toronto Falcons Soccer Club was a Canadian soccer club founded in 1975 that operated in the Canadian National Soccer League The club won the Playoff Championship in 1978, and the regular season championship in 1980.

History

The club was created in 1975 under the name Falcons and was based in Toronto. The team operated as professional club in the Canadian National Soccer League, and was formed by brothers Jan and Zdzisław Rygiel. In their debut season the Falcons began play in the second division in 1976 finishing second last in the standings. In 1977, the club finished first in the standings claiming the second division championship, and reached the finals of the NSL cup, but where defeated by Toronto Panhellenic. In 1978, the Falcons were promoted to the First Division where they finished third in the standings and clinched a playoff berth. In the post season the Toronto side won the playoff championship and including the NSL cup. Their next silverware was in 1980 where they finished first in the standings clinching the regular season championship.
The club faced financial difficulties which forced the club to withdraw from the league in 1982 after finishing second last in the standings. Notable players which featured with the club were Janusz Zmijewski, Zygfryd Szołtysik, Janusz Wójcik, Tadeusz Polak, and Jerzy Patoła.
