Toyota Innova
The Toyota Innova is a compact MPV manufactured by the Japanese automaker Toyota. It is first produced in Indonesia under supervision by Toyota Astra Motor since 2004 and has been manufactured in other countries as well. As with the Kijang, which it replaced, the Innova is produced and first marketed in 2004 in Indonesia. The Innova has a body-on-frame chassis constructed from Toyota's IMV platform together with the Hilux pickup truck and the Fortuner SUV. Its official name in Indonesia is Toyota Kijang Innova, while for other countries it is called "Innova" or "Innova Crysta".
The Innova was also introduced as a replacement for both the Kijang as well as its rebadged derivatives in foreign markets, including the Qualis in India, the Unser in Malaysia, the Tamaraw FX/Revo in the Philippines, and the Zace in Vietnam. The Innova is also sold in Thailand, Cambodia, Brunei, the Middle East, Ecuador, Egypt, Jamaica, and Argentina.
The name "Innova" comes from the English word innovation.
First generation (AN40; 2004)
On 1 September 2004, Toyota launched the AN40 series Innova, badged as Kijang Innova in Indonesia. This came after the 2003 introduction of the Avanza—the replacement for low-spec versions of the Kijang. Thus, the Innova is more luxurious and expensive than the Kijang.The Innova was sold in large numbers in India —primarily serving the tourist taxi market and fleet operations of large technology business process outsourcing companies. It also enjoyed large markets in Taiwan, Malaysia, and Philippines. In the Philippines, it replaced the Revo, the name of Kijang in that market.
Engines
The Innova is powered by either a 2.0-litre petrol 1TR-FE VVT-i, a 2.7-litre petrol 2TR-FE VVT-i, or a 2.5-litre 2KD-FTV D-4D common rail turbocharged diesel engine. Trim levels are J, E, G, and V. The 2.7-litre unit is only offered for the V trim, paired solely with 4-speed automatic transmission.The 2.7-litre petrol engine was dropped from the Indonesian market in 2007 due to low demand. The diesel variants use a turbocharged 2KD-FTV engine which produces and of torque when mated to the four-speed automatic transmission and when mated to the five-speed manual. Petrol versions are also available in five-speed manual or four-speed automatic versions. All variants is only available with rear-wheel drive configuration.
Updates
2007
In early 2007, the engines on the Indonesian market Kijang Innova were updated to comply with the Euro 2 emission standards. It received a catalytic converter and the injection system was changed to a closed loop system. The Innova also received a front mesh grille. The E trim of the Kijang Innova received double blower air conditioner, while the G trim received 2 DIN CD and cassette player.2008
The facelifted Innova was first spotted in Indonesia and launched on 26 August 2008. It featured a redesigned front and rear bumper, front grille, and rear tail lamps. The V trim use updated wheels, while the previous wheels used on the pre-facelift model V trim were installed on the G trim. This model also features automatic climate control, side door impact beams, as well as new extras such as parking sensors and an in-dash CD changer. The facelifted Innova was launched in the Philippines in November 2008 and in India on 28 January 2009. In Indonesia, the facelifted versions include the E trim, which now features the parts from the pre-facelift G trim.2011
On 22 July 2011, PT Toyota-Astra Motor launched the second facelift of the Innova, which is also known as the Grand New Kijang Innova. It featured redesigned headlights, grille, bonnet, bumpers and tail lights. The interior is updated with a new steering wheel, new air-conditioning knobs, and a revised center dashboard. For the Indonesian market only, the V trim used updated wheels, while the previous wheels used on the first facelift model V trim were installed on the E and G trims.2013
On 19 August 2013, PT Toyota-Astra Motor launched the third facelift of the Innova, which is known as the New Kijang Innova. Changes consist of a larger grille, redesigned bumpers and a new trunk garnish exclusive to the E, G and V trims. A four-spoke steering wheel and dual airbags are also standard features on this model. In August 2014, for the 2015 model year, the Kijang Innova was updated again with the redesigned wheels exclusive to the G, V and Luxury trims, while the previous wheels used on the second facelift model V trim were installed on the E trim. The Luxury trims were received a redesigned rear bumper. All 2015 models received a new darker Silver Metallic colour option.Markets

In India, the Innova is available with twelve variants. Three variants of the Innova come with a petrol engine option which is powered by a 1,998 cc, 1TR-FE, petrol, inline four-cylinder petrol engine with electronic fuel injection. The diesel variants of the Innova are powered by 2,494 cc, 2KD-FTV diesel with intercooler and turbocharger four-cylinder engine. In 2012, Toyota Bharat introduced a new grade "Z" in India which is placed above the VX grade—making it the most expensive trim in the entire line up. The available grades are E, G, GX, VX and Z.The first generation Innova received an update for the Indian market in 2015. With this update, all variants gained dual airbags and there were cosmetic changes such as the inclusion of dark grey two-tone alloy wheels, wood finished steering wheel, redesigned leather seats, and a new oak interior colour. Rear HVAC outlets were also specified as standard as part of this update.
Indonesia
Sold as the Kijang Innova, trim levels are J Business, J, E, G and V, as well as G Luxury and V Luxury.This generation has been facelifted three times:
- 2008: Updated front bumper and grille design, rear lamps and bumpers, and redesigned the wheels. Two-tone interior colour is now a standard. The E trim received double blower AC.
- 2011: Updated front and rear fascia and redesigned the wheels. The E trim received alloy wheels, while the J trim received center caps. The steering wheel design is now changed. The center dashboard fascia has freshened design and add more features such as sat-nav, cameras, etc. A rear wiper is now a standard.
- 2013: Redesigned the front bumper, rear bumper and grille and added rear ornaments. ABS, four-spoke steering wheel, rear blower and dual SRS airbags is now a standard. From 2014, the G and V trims, as well as the Luxury variants received two-tone wheel colour and new aerokit. Interior colour was changed to black and grey.
Malaysia
Philippines
The Innova was introduced in 2005 to replace the Toyota Revo. Trim levels include the J, the E, the G, and the V. It is used as a taxicab by the Ninoy Aquino International Airport's coupon taxi companies in Metro Manila, Metered taxicab in Baguio City and Cagayan De Oro and as a patrol vehicle by the Philippine National Police. An upgraded version of the Innova E trim was called the Sport Runner. It is only available with a 2.5-litre 2KD-FTV turbocharged diesel engine and was offered with either automatic or manual transmission. It was offered until early 2012 and in that same year, a facelifted version of the Innova was launched, featuring a redesigned front bumper, headlights, and taillights. The only difference is that the E trim offers Twilight Blue colour. In early 2014, another facelifted version of the Innova was launched; a redesigned front bumper and tailgate were featured. An additional colour, Dark Brown Metallic, was available in E, G and V trims. The V trim received GPS navigation. In June 2015, TMP offered a limited edition 1 Million Innova with GPS navigation, rear spoiler and 1 Million badge, and it has a special Jade Green Metallic exterior colour.Vietnam
The Innova is produced locally and was the first product of Toyota Motor Vietnam, introduced in January 2006. It is a commonly used as a taxi in Vietnam.Second generation (AN140; 2015)
The second generation Innova, designated AN140 series, was launched on 23 November 2015 in Jakarta, Indonesia. The new series is a completely new vehicle with a new platform and new diesel engines. The 2.0-litre and 2.7-litre petrol engines are carried over from the previous model with slight modifications, while the 2.4-litre and 2.8-litre diesel engines are completely new. The available transmission options are five-speed manual and six-speed automatic.The AN140 is fully manufactured in Indonesia and India, and also assembled as CKD in Malaysia, Philippines, and Vietnam.

For the Indian market, Toyota Kirloskar Motor showcased the second generation Innova at Auto Expo in February 2016. Called the Innova Crysta, the all-new model of the car was launched in May 2016. Exclusive for this model is a 2.8-litre 1GD-FTV inline-four turbocharged diesel engine producing and. Features include cruise control, leather seats, powered seats and a powered boot lid. The Innova launched in May 2016 as with two diesel engine options: the 2.8-litre 1GD-FTV diesel and the 2.4-litre 2GD-FTV diesel. The 2.8-litre engine gets the six-speed automatic transmission with sequential shift while the 2.4-litre gets the five-speed manual transmission. In August 2016, Toyota Bharat launched the petrol powered Innova Crysta with a 2.7-litre 2TR-FE petrol I4 engine producing 160 hp and 181 lbf·ft. The petrol engine is mated with either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission with sequential shift according to different trim levels.The Indian specification AN140 employs a double wishbone suspension with coil springs and stabilizer up front and a four-link with coil spring and lateral road suspension at the rear. The low end variants ride on 16-inch alloy wheels, while the top-end variant receives 17-inch alloy wheels.
Trim levels are G, V and Z. The Z trim is the highest and most expensive trim level. In 2018, Toyota launched the Innova Touring Sport based on the Innova Venturer and was updated with 6-speed manual transmission with iMT. As of 2019, the Touring Sport is the top-of-the-line trim level in the Indian lineup of Innova.
In 2020, the 2.8-litre 1GD-FTV engine was discontinued for the Indian market due to the implementation of Bharat Stage 6 emission standard. The 2.8-litre automatic variant was subsequently replaced with the 2.4-litre automatic variant.
Indonesia
The AN140 Innova was launched the first time in the country on 23 November 2015. Trim levels of the Indonesian market Kijang Innova are the base G, the mid-level V and the flagship Q trim. As the Innova is moving up-class to make room for the Toyota Sienta, the J and E trim from the previous generation was removed.The G and V trims are equipped with standard halogen headlamps with reflector, while the Q trim has LED projector headlamps and LED daytime running lights. All trim levels are equipped with 16-inch alloy wheels as standard. Only the 2.4 Q has 17-inch alloy wheels.
All trim levels have multi information display, parking camera, driving mode selector, triple blower air conditioning, steering-mounted audio control, 6 speakers, chilled glove box and a tilt-telescopic steering system as standard. The G trim has a 2-DIN audio system with 7-inch touchscreen monitor, while the V and Q trims are equipped with 8-inch monitor. V and Q audio systems are enhanced with Miracast, DLNA, Wi-Fi, internet browser, Toyota Move application and GPS navigation system. Automatic single zone climate control AC is available as standard for V and Q trims. The G and V trims has copper brown interior colour with faux aluminium panel, while the Q trim has full black interior colour, wood panel and captain seats as standard. The start-stop engine button and follow me home function are only available in the Q trim. Emergency brake signal, vehicle stability control and hill-start assist are exclusive for the Q diesel trim. These features are not present in the Q petrol.
The engine variants in the Indonesian market are the 2.0-litre 1TR-FE petrol and 2.4-litre 2GD-FTV common rail diesel. The 2.4-litre 2GD-FTV diesel engine generates and of torque when mated to the six-speed automatic transmission and of torque when mated to the five-speed manual. The 2.7-litre 2TR-FE is not offered in the domestic market due to low demand, and the 2.8-litre 1GD-FTV is not offered in the country due to the 125 percent luxury goods tax imposed to non-commercial diesel vehicle with engine capacity larger than 2.5-litre.
The flagship variant of the Kijang Innova, called the Venturer, was launched in Indonesia on 16 January 2017. It replaced the Q diesel trim. The "Venturer" trim imitates a crossover SUV look by applying black plastic moulding around the wheel arch, black front bumper spoiler with chrome plating, front grille ornament, black plastic side skirt with chrome plating, piano black painted grille, rear door garnish, rear bumper lower spoiler and piano black 17-inch alloy wheels. It is also equipped with black leather seats and captain seats. The "Venturer" also has the special colour "red mica metallic".
On 10 August 2017, the Kijang Innova received an update. For the G trim, the plastic grille ornament was replaced with a chrome grille ornament. The V trim received LED projector headlamps. Both Q trim and Venturer received an 8-inch rear monitor and auto folding outer mirror, with the 2.0 Q trim received 17-inch alloy wheels from the discontinued Q diesel trim. This updated Kijang Innova was introduced at the 25th Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show.
On 2 August 2018, the petrol engine on the Kijang Innova was updated again to comply with the Euro 4 emission standards. Along with the updated petrol engine, the V trim received an 8-inch rear monitor and the same 8-inch monitor that is also installed on the Q trim and Venturer. This was introduced during the 26th Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show.
Malaysia
The AN140 Innova was launched in Malaysia on 5 December 2016. It is assembled by UMW Toyota Motor at its Shah Alam facility in Malaysia. It is available in E and G trim levels. In September 2017, UMW Toyota announced a new variant, the 2.0X to become the range-topper in the Innova line-up with addition of LED headlights, larger alloy wheels, seven-seater rather than an eight with leather upholstery and six-way powered driver's seat.Philippines
The second generation Innova was launched in the Philippine market on 26 February 2016. Standard trim levels include the base J, the mid-level E, the higher-spec G and the top-of-the-line V. A special variant called the Touring Sport is also available.All trim levels are powered by a 2.8-litre 1GD-FTV turbocharged four cylinder diesel engine, rated at and of torque, or a 2.0-litre 1TR-FE four-cylinder petrol engine with and of torque, mated to either a 5-speed manual or a new 6-speed automatic transmission with sequential shift. It also gets power and economy modes as new features. The base J trim up to the G trim comes equipped with standard halogen headlamps and keyless entry, while the V trim gets LED projector headlamps and LED daytime running lights and captain seats, as well as a push engine start/stop button. A 2-DIN audio system is standard on the J and E trims, while the G and V trims, as well as the Touring Sport variant, features a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with navigation. The J trim is equipped with 16-inch steel wheels with hub caps while the E and G trims gets a 16-inch 5-spoke alloy wheels, the V trim gets 17-inch alloy wheels, while the Touring Sport gets the same wheels size and design from the E and G trims but with a colour black schemed design.
The AN140 Innova rolled off Toyota's assembly plant in Santa Rosa, Laguna on 14 April 2016 and went on sale across Toyota's Philippine dealerships a few days later.
