Trapezitsa (fortress)


Trapezitsa is a medieval stronghold located on a hill with the same name in Veliko Tarnovo in northern Bulgaria.

History

During the Second Bulgarian Empire the first castle of the Asen dynasty was built on the hill. In the following years Boyars and Orthodox clerics lived on the hill. The Monastery of St Ivan Rilski was located in this fortress. The relics of the Saint were kept there until 1495.

Recovery

Since the 1970s the Bulgarian government has had plans for the restoration of the historical hill. In 2009 the south watchtower was restored.
