Tyger Valley


Tyger Valley or commonly spelt as Tygervalley is a business and residential suburb of Bellville in the Western Cape, South Africa. Tygervalley gets its name from being in the Tygerberg Valley in Tygerberg which is a northern district of the City of Cape Town.

Administration

Tyger Valley forms part of the City of Cape Town Metropolitan Municipality which is the municipality governing Cape Town and it's metropolitan area. Tyger Valley forms part of Ward 70 of the City of Cape Town's Subcouncil 3.

Geography

Tyger Valley lies amongst the hills of the Tygerberg Valley and is about 24 kilometres north-west of Cape Town and 3 kilometres north of the Bellville Central Business District. It is located directly north of the N1 freeway which forms its southern boundary.
The area is surrounded by Durbanville in the north and the Bellville neighbourhoods of Oakdale in the south, Boston in the south-west, Bloemhof in the south-east, Hoheizen and Welgemoed in the west, Ridgeworth in the east, Rosendal in the north-east and Door De Kraal in the north-west.

Demographics

The name Tyger Valley was not in the 2011 census, but it included the following areas that compose Tyger Valley: Alf Blv., Bellville Park, Bo Oakdale, Danena, Hume, O'Kennedyville, Rosenpark and Stellenbosch University.
Majority of Tyger Valley is part of Bellville except for Hume which is part of Durbanville.

Education

The only basic education institution in Tygervalley is Curro Rosen Castle is a private nursery school in the neighbourhood of Rosenpark.
Higher education institutions in Tygervalley include the Stellenbosch University has its Bellville Park campus on the slopes of the Tygerberg Valley hills and adjacent the N1 highway. Pearson Institute of Higher Education has its Durbanville campus near High Street.
Since Tyger Valley is mainly a commercial district there are not many schools in the area however there are surrounding basic education schools such as Bellpark Primary School, Boston Primary School, Eversdal Primary School, Hoërskool D.F Malan, Holy Cross Sister's School, Fairmont High School, Kenridge Primary School, Stellenberg High School and Welgemoed Primary School.

Healthcare

Intercare has a sub-acute hospital near Tygervalley Shopping Centre.

Retail

Tyger Valley includes three main shopping centres: Tygervalley Shopping Centre, the Willowbridge Shopping Centre and High Street.
Out of the three, Tygervalley Shopping Centre is the largest and it is also the 2nd largest in Cape Town. Tygervalley Centre has over 250 stores including cinemas and a theatre, the Barnyard Theatre.
Adjacent to the Tygervalley Shopping Centre, is the Willowbridge Shopping Centre. It has 80 stores and is divided into a northern and southern part. It was the previous location of the Barnyard Theatre which is now in the Tygervalley Shopping Centre.
High Street Shopping Complex is situated in the northern area of Tyger Valley on Durban Road. It includes different types of stores, restaurants and car delearships.
Durban Road and Willie van Schoor Avenue are the main roads of Tygervalley and feature office buildings, shops and car dealerships. Willie van Schoor Avenue is the north bound road for the R302 and Durban Road is the south bound road for the R302. Notable shopping facilities/car delearships adjacent or between Durban Rd/Willie v. Schoor Ave include KFC, McDonald's, Nando's, Vida e Caffè, Standard Bank, Kwikspar, Mini Cooper, BMW, Honda, Hyundai, Nissan, Toyota, Peugeot and Citroën amongst others.

Commerce

Tygervalley is also a major financial and business district, quite similar to Sandton near Johannesburg and is a major commercial node of Cape Town. Insurance companies, Santam and Metropolitan and medical scheme company, Prosano have their headquarters in Tygervalley. Sanlam Investments has its head offices in Tygervalley and its parent company Sanlam has its headquarters in Bellville Central. Major South African food company- Pioneer Foods, Petroleum Agency SA, financial services agency- PSG Konsult and Pepkor's IT division have their head offices in Tygervalley. Other companies that have regional offices in Tygervalley are LabourNet, Cartrack Western Cape, SANRAL Western Region and FedGroup.
There are several office parks in Tygervalley including Old Oak Office Park, Tijger Park and Tyger Waterfront, South Gate Waterfront, Tyger Falls.

Transport

Air

The nearest airport is the Cape Town International Airport which serves the greater Cape Town area and is approximately 15 kilometres south of Tyger Valley.

Rail

The nearest train station is the Bellville train station which has commuter services provided by Metrorail Western Cape.

Road

Similar to the shopping district of Cape Gate in Brackenfell, further north-east on the eastern outskirts of the Cape Town, Tygervalley also lies north of the N1 highway to Paarl and Cape Town city centre. The N1's exit 23 connects it to Tygervalley with the R302.
Roads that pass through Tygervalley include the N1, M30, M31, M121 and the R302.
The Tyger Waterfront is a complex comprising of apartment buildings and office buildings. The complexe is located on the banks of a 4 ha man-made lake.
This area also includes restaurants such as Bossa, Cattle Baron Steak House and Copper Club amongst others.

Attractions

Cool Runnings is the only toboggan park in Africa located on the western side of the valley on the slopes of the Tygerberg hills.
