Type 3 aircraft machine gun

Type 3 was a Japanese Navy aircraft machine gun used during World War II. It was based on the American M2 Browning machine gun but used the 13.2x96mm Hotchkiss cartridge.

History

Type 3 was a copy of the Browning M2 and had very similar 13.2 mm machine gun ammunition Hotchkiss. Despite the small difference in calibers, it was possible to use Browning tapes in the Japanese machine gun, which apparently took place during the war. The machine gun was produced in 1943–45. Used on movable and fixed versions, slightly different construction details. The mobile version featured a longer barrel.
The fixed version was used on later models of the Mitsubishi A6M Zero fighter and Kawanishi N1K-J Shiden. In the mobile version, Type 3 was partially replaced by the end of the war Type 2.
