Upendra Subba


Upendra Bahadur Angdembe who is known as Upendra Subba is a poet, lyricist and story writer. He is one of the initiator of the movement called Srijanshil Arajakta along with Rajan Mukarung and Hangyug Agyat

About his life and career

Poet, lyricist and Story writer Upendra Subba was born in Angsarang-8, Panchthar, eastern hilly district of Nepal. His birth name was Upendra Bahadur Angdembe, he adopted shorter name Upendra Subba for his creative works.
In 1997, he moved to capital Kathmandu City from small city Damak to become a songwriter. His song writing had started to see few success with music composed by Shantiram Rai. His songs were sung by notable singers like Deep Shrestha,Robin Sharma, Ananda Karki, Yam Baral and also won some competitions. But he felt that song recording was expensive and music industry was heading towards the directions unlike his taste.
Around this time, he met Rajan Mukarung and Hangyug Agyat. They jointly started a new literary movement called Srijanshil Arajakta.
His book "Lato Pahad" won Padmashree award in 2015 and He was awarded National award for best script writer for movie Kabaddi jointly with Ram Babu Gurung.
He credits their joint movement "Srijanshil Arajakta" for his success in writing, he thinks that success of "Lato Pahad" was possible because Rajan Mukarung paved path for him by success of his novels "Hechhakuppa" and winning Madan puraskar with "Damini Bhir".
For his film writing, he gives credit to director Ram Babu Gurung. They have collaborated in super hit movies Kabaddi, Kabaddi Kabaddi.
His first story pictured was "Keba Kokma", movie in Limbu language, directed by Ravi Serma.
His stories were also adapted as theatrical play with the same name 'Lato Pahad'.
He also made brief appearances in movies Kabaddi and Kabaddi Kabaddi, but he thinks acting is not his cup of tea and deems those appearances as forced upon him by his friends.
He visited Hong Kong in 2016 to attend a program by Critics Society.
