Ushiku, Ibaraki


Ushiku is a city located in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan. As of September 2015, the city had an estimated population of 84,285 and a population density of 1,430 persons per km². Its total area is.

Geography

Ushiku is located in southern Ibaraki Prefecture, in the low-lying marshy flatlands south of Lake Kasumigaura. It is about 50 kilometers from central Tokyo.

Surrounding municipalities

The area of Ushiku developed as a castle town around Ushiku Domain under the Tokugawa shogunate in the Edo period.
The village of Ushiku was created with the establishment of the municipalities system on April 1, 1889. On January 1, 1954 it was elevated to town status and to city status on June 1, 1986.
