WAKZ

WAKZ (95.9 FM, "REAL 95.9" is a radio station licensed to Sharpsville, Pennsylvania, and serving Youngstown, Ohio. The station is owned by iHeartMedia, Inc.. The station previously aired a Top 40 radio format. WAKZ previously competed with WHOT-FM "Hot 101" And now competes with WLOA. On Thursday July 2, 2020 at 2 PM, WAKZ flipped to Urban Contemporary as "Real 95.9", branded as, Youngstown's REAL Hip Hop and R&B. The last song on KISS FM was "End of the Road" by Boyz II Men, while the first song on REAL was Toosie Slide by Drake. It is very similar to its sister station, REAL 106.1, WAKS-HD2/W291BV in Cleveland.
Launching with 5000 songs commercial-free, the station will feature the syndicated Breakfast Club in mornings starting Monday, July 13. The remainder of the station’s lineup will feature the company’s national air talent of Big Sue in middays, Papa Keith in afternoons, and T-Roy at night.
The move gives Youngstown two Hip Hop stations as WAKZ joins Over/Under LLC’s “Loud 102.3” 1470/102.3 WLOA/W272EI, which launched in April 2019. That launch ended a six year drought in the market for the format following Bernard Radio’s sale of “101.9 Jamz” WRBP to Educational Media Foundation in early 2013. The change at WAKZ now leaves Cumulus Media’s “Hot 101” WHOT-FM as the only CHR in the market.
