Wang Mai Subdistrict, Bangkok

Wang Mai is one of the four khwaengs of Pathum Wan District, Bangkok.

History

The name of this sub-district, "Wang Mai", means "new palace", which refers to Windsor Palace, the royal residence of the Crown Prince Vajirunhis. This crown prince was the eldest son of King Chulalongkorn and the first Crown Prince of Siam. The prince's palace was situated in this sub-district and was regarded as one of the most beautiful and magnificent palaces in the region. Ironically, the prince met his demise in 1894 and never came to live here. Later on, the palace became a part of Chulalongkorn University.
Ultimately, the palace was demolished by the cabinet order after the revolution in 1932 to create a Supachalasai Stadium, which stands to the present day.
It was once the location of the Pathum Wan District Office.
