Yasin (rapper)


Yasin Abdullahi Mahamoud, known as Yasin Byn, or just the mononym Yasin, is a Swedish hip hop artist.

Biography

Mahamoud was born in Rinkeby, part of the Swedish Million Programme for affordable housing in northwest Stockholm, and grew up with his mother and five siblings. The name Yasin Byn hints at his background in Rinkeby, which is popularly called the Byn. He started in hip hop music with his childhood friends, notably artist Jaffar Byn recording online videos. That led to him joining the Swedish hip hop collective Byn Block Entertainment or BBE with aspiring artist mostly from Rinkeby. BBE transitioned to a wider collaboration with Järva, forming the larger hip hop collective known as GhettoSuperstars. In 2016, he was included in the Ghettosuperstars collective album Allstars.
Mahamoud was sentenced in May 2018 to two years and three months imprisonment for serious crimes using firearms. He was released after serving two-thirds of his sentence. In 2020, Mahamoud was arrested and set in custody, due to being accused of murdering one of his friends in Rinkeby. He was later released, but is still suspected of crime.
In 2019, he released his official debut single "DSGIS" or "Det som göms i snö". The follow-up single "XO" in collaboration with Swedish rapper Dree Low topped Sverigetopplistan, the official Swedish Singles Chart with the Yasin album Handen under Mona Lisas kjol topping the Swedish Albums Chart. His most recent single, "Workin", was released in April 2020 and peaked at number five on the Swedish Singles Chart.
