History
Before 1866, the city was patrolled by town constables. In July of that year, the people of the town voted to hire fourteen police officers from nearby New York City. In March 1871, the state government allowed the city to form its own police department. As formed, the department had twenty-two employees headed by a captain. It now has about six hundred police officers.Line of duty deaths
