Zhulat


Zhulat is a village in South Albania, in south-eastern Europe, on the road Tepelenë - Gjirokastër. It is part of the former Cepo municipality. At the 2015 local government reform it became part of the municipality Gjirokastër. The village is inhabited by Muslim Albanians. Zhulat played a significant role in the Albanian Nationalism in the 2nd half of the 19th century and early 20th century

Notable personalities

Papa Zhuli

Papa Zhuli, a Catholic priest, is considered the founder of Zhulat, as well as the founder of a version of Kanun, known as "Kanuni i Papa Zhulit" which would be spread later in all Laberia region under the name "Kanuni i Labërisë".

Petro Zhulati

A powerful Albanian landlord to have lived in Zhulat. He is believed to have lived in the early eleventh century. He died in battle while fighting against the Eastern Roman Empire for unknown reasons. An old folkloric polyphonic song mentions him fighting against Byzantine forces. A fierce battle must have taken place since local Lab Albanians still retain memories of that clash through a song which is 950 years old.
