Borys Paton


Borys Yevhenovych Paton is a Ukrainian scientist, the long-time chairman of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. He was appointed to this post in 1962 and re-appointed for another term in 2015. Paton did not submit his candidacy for the post in March 2020, which signifies that he is leaving this position.

Biography

He was born in Kyiv in the family of scientist and founder of Paton Institute of Electric Welding in Kyiv, Professor Evgeny Oscarovich Paton. His mother was a housewife. In 1941, he completed Kyiv Polytechnic Institute and became an engineer. Paton joined the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine on November 18, 1958 and is the first person to have been awarded the title of the Hero of Ukraine. He holds a doctoral degree in technical sciences and is known for his works in electric welding. Paton's father, Evgeny Paton, was also famous for his works in electric welding. The first welded bridge in Kyiv, constructed under the supervision of Evgeny Paton, bears his name. In the early 1970s and 1980s Paton had advised the Soviet authorities not to build the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant.
Borys Paton is an author of more than 1000 publications, including 20 monographs and more than 400 inventions.

Research activities

Borys Paton devoted his scientific research to such processes:
Under his leadership, electroslag welding was created which became a fundamentally new method of welding. Paton led research on the application of welding heat sources for the improvement of the quality of the smelted metal. On this basis a new branch of metallurgy was founded called special electrometallurgy. He was the first researcher to start intensive research in the field of the use of welding and related technologies in space.
