Content management system


A content management system is a software application that can be used to manage the creation and modification of digital content. CMSs are typically used for enterprise content management and web content management. ECM typically supports multiple users in a collaborative environment by integrating document management, digital asset management and record retention. Alternatively, WCM is the collaborative authoring for websites and may include text and embed graphics, photos, video, audio, maps and program code that display content and interact with the user. ECM typically includes a WCM function.

Structure

A typically has two major components: a content management application, as the front-end user interface that allows a user, even with limited expertise, to add, modify, and remove content from a website without the intervention of a webmaster; and a content delivery application, that compiles the content and updates the website.

Video content management systems have increased in popularity in recent years and integrate many of the same features as a CMS but with a specific focus on video management. Previously, these were found mostly in internal networks of corporations for training purposes but the advent of point-and-click VCMSs have brought the platforms mainstream.

Based on market share statistics, the most popular content management system is WordPress, used by more than 37.7% of all websites on the internet, followed by Shopify used by 2.5% of the websites and Joomla used by 2.4% of the websites.
