Elam Vangilder


Elam Russell Vangilder, was a professional baseball player who played pitcher in the Major Leagues from -. He would play for the St. Louis Browns and Detroit Tigers.
His baseball career was brought to an end after suffering from a knee injury that required surgery. Unfortunately the surgery was unable to repair the knee and caused his inability to walk without support from a cane or crutch.
Vangilder was a better than average hitting pitcher in his major league career. He posted a.243 batting average with 61 runs, 8 home runs and 50 RBI. His best year with the bat was with the 1922 St. Louis Browns when he hit.344 with 2 home runs and 11 RBI.
He returned to Cape Girardeau, Missouri, where he lived out his life on his dairy farm.
