Hilgen and Wittenberg Woolen Mill
The Hilgen and Wittenberg Woolen Mill is located in Cedarburg, Wisconsin, United States. It was built in 1864 by Frederick Hilgen, Diedrich Wittenberg, and Joseph Trottman to produce yarns, blankets, and flannels. In the 19th Century, it was the only mill of its kind west of Philadelphia.
In 1897, the mill installed a direct current electric generator, which provided the building—as well as the Wittenberg Mansion across the street—with the first electric light in the city of Cedarburg.
The woolen mill closed in 1968. Currently, the building serves as a restaurant and specialty store. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
