Lilavati's Daughters


Lilavati's Daughters is a collection of biographical essays on women scientists of India. It was published in the form of a book by Indian Academy of Sciences in 2008. The book was jointly edited by Rohini Godbole and Ram Ramaswamy.
Each essay depicts the experiences and backgrounds of the women that helped them choose and sustain a career in science.
Lilavati was a treatise written by 12th-century Indian mathematician Bhāskara II. It deals with arithmetics, algebra, geometry, etc. through poetic conversations with his daughter Lilavati.

Janaki Ammal, chemist Asima Chatterjee, physician Anandibai Joshi, anthropologist Iravati Karve, biochemist Kamala Sohonie, medical researcher Kamal Ranadive, chemist Darshan Ranganathan, physicist B. Vijayalakshmi, meteorologist Anna Mani, fluid mechanist Rama Govindarajan and many others.
