The following are notable people who intentionally killed themselves in the 21st century. Suicides completed under duress are included. Deaths by accident or misadventure are excluded. Individuals who might or might not have died by their own hand, or whose intention to die is in dispute, but who are widely believed to have deliberately killed themselves, may be listed under Possible suicides.

- Joseph Brooks, American screenwriter, director, producer, and composer known for the song "You Light Up My Life" Police officials would not discuss the contents of the note. - Spalding Gray, American actor, playwright, screenwriter, performance artist, and monologuist; jumped off Staten Island Ferry. In June 2001, he suffered severe injuries in a car crash while on vacation in Ireland. In the crash, Gray, who battled depression and bipolar tendencies, suffered a broken hip, leaving his right leg almost immobilized and a fracture in his skull that left a jagged scar on his forehead, leaving him with depression and a brain injury. During surgery in which a titanium plate was placed over the break in his skull, surgeons removed dozens of bone fragments from his frontal cortex.

- Brodie Panlock, age 19, was an Australian waitress from Melbourne who died after jumping from a multilevel carpark in Hawthorn. Her suicide was attributed to serious workplace bullying at the cafe where she worked. Her parents successfully lobbied the Victorian Government to amend the Crimes Act 1958 to include serious bullying as a criminal offence with a maximum penalty of ten years imprisonment.
- Jeret "Speedy" Peterson, American skier, Olympic medalist; gunshot. He was still reeling from the suicide of a friend named Trevor Fernald, who had died of suicide in front of Peterson in 2005, also from a self-inflicted gunshot. Peterson also had problems with alcohol and depression and admitted he had his own thoughts of suicide—all stemming from a childhood in which he was sexually abused and during which at the age of 5 years old he lost one of his older sisters to a drunk driver.

- Leila Pahlavi, Princes of Iran and the youngest daughter of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, Shah of Iran, and his third wife, Farah Pahlavi. She was found dead in her room in the Leonard Hotel in London just before 19:30 BST by her doctor. She was found to have more than five times the lethal dose of Seconal, a kind of barbituratein her system.
- Ali-Reza Pahlavi, Prince of Iran and the youngest son of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, Shah of Iran, and his third wife, Farah Pahlavi. After a long period of depression, on January 4, 2011, Alireza died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Possible suicides
- David Carradine, American actor, hanging, however, reported evidence suggested that his death was accidental, the result of erotic asphyxiation. Two autopsies were conducted and concluded that the death was not a suicide.
- Elliott Smith, American musician, stab wounds to chest. His death was originally ruled a suicide when his girlfriend, Jennifer Chiba, claimed that she was not with Smith when he allegedly stabbed himself. Investigations since have claimed that Smith may have been having an argument with Chiba before his death, and the situation probably escalated to the point where Chiba stabbed Smith twice.
- Gary Speed, Welsh footballer and manager, found hanging. Whilst there was evidence the pressure of management had put some strain on his marriage and he and his wife had argued the night before his death, the official verdict of the coroner was a narrative verdict as he could not be sure the deceased had meant to take his own life.
- Jeffrey Epstein, an American financier and sex offender. Found to have hung himself in his prison cell though the circumstances of his death remain unclear.
