Mark Liu


Mark Liu is executive chairman of the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co, the world’s largest contract chipmaker, since June 2018, taking over from founder and chairman of TSMC Morris Chang when he retired. TSMC has a market value of approximately US$185 billion.

Early life and education

Liu was born in Taipei, Taiwan. He attended Taipei Municipal Jianguo High School before receiving his B.S. degree in electrical engineering from National Taiwan University and then his M.S. and Ph.D. in electrical engineering and computer science at the University of California, Berkeley.

Career

Liu started his career at Intel and AT&T Bell Laboratories in the United States. From 1983 to 1987 he was with Intel Corporation, developing silicon process technologies for Intel microprocessors. From 1987 to 1993, he was a research manager for the High Speed Electronics Research Laboratory with AT&T Bell Laboratory. Liu began working at TSMC in 1993. He served as the president of Worldwide Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp. in 2000 when TSMC acquired them. He became chief operating officer of TSMC in 2012 and then assumed the role as co-CEO in 2013 with C.C. Wei. Liu established TSMC's first 12-inch fab and its GIGAFAB operations.
Under Liu's leadership, TSMC was awarded the position as a 2018 Thomson Reuters Top 100 Global Technology Leader.
Liu is chairman of the Taiwan Semiconductor Industry Association, serves on the Presidential CEO Advisory Board of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and serves on the Engineering Advisory Board at the UC Berkeley College of Engineering.
