Saddleback gunnel


The saddleback gunnel is a medium gunnel found along the western coast of North America.

Description

The saddleback gunnel is an elongated eel like fish with a pronounced brown and tan pattern. Max size is around 30 cm.

Range and habitat

The saddleback gunnel ranges from Vancouver Island in the north to Santa Barbara County, California in the south. It is found at depths of 0-50 m along the coast and in estuaries. They are rarely seen by divers because they spend most of the day in structure and are flighty, even at night.

Life history

Both males and females guard the egg mass after spawning.
