Tamrat Desta


Tamrat Desta was an Ethiopian singer and songwriter, a prominent artist throughout 2000s era and gained a fame after the release of his debut album Anleyaym in 2004 and a song "Hakime Nesh".

Biography

Tamrat Desta was born in Tiqur Wuha near Shashamane, Ethiopia. He was the second of three children, all boys. After some years in Tiqur Wuha, his family moved to Shashemene and later went to Awassa, where Tamrat completed high school.
In 1998, Tamrat moved to Dire Dawa to live with his guardian; while there, he began to perform as a singer.
In 1999, Tamrat relocated to Addis Ababa to pursue his music career. He released his first album, Anleyaym in 2004. Most of the lyrics on this CD were written by Habtamu Bogale, and the melodies of six tracks were composed by Tamrat. He released several singles, including "Anleyaym" in 2004 and "Kanchi Ayibeltim" in 2008. In 2014, Tamrat released an album called Keza Sefer.

Death

On April 18, 2018, Tamrat went to a clinic in Addis Ababa seeking medical help for tonsillitis. The physician injected a remedy for his tonsillitis. While traveling home, Tamrat collapsed and was rendered unconsciousness. He was later pronounced dead at hospital. People speculate that the physician injected him with unknown drug that were not for tonsillitis. His death was deemed as a medical error. His funeral service held at Holy Trinity Cathedral Church in Addis Ababa on April 19 was attended by thousands of fans and famous figures alike. He was the father of five children.
