Turton was platted in 1886. It was named after Turton, England, the native home of an early settler. An early variant name was St. Paul. A post office has been in operation in Turton since 1887.

The average household size was 1.85 and the average family size was 2.62. The median age in the town was 53.5 years. 10.4% of residents were under the age of 18; 6.4% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 10.5% were from 25 to 44; 45.9% were from 45 to 64; and 27.1% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the town was 56.3% male and 43.8% female.

There were 34 households out of which 8.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.1% were married couples living together, 2.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 50.0% were non-families. 44.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 29.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 1.79 and the average family size was 2.47. In the town, the population was spread out with 11.5% under the age of 18, 1.6% from 18 to 24, 16.4% from 25 to 44, 27.9% from 45 to 64, and 42.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 59 years. For every 100 females, there were 90.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 107.7 males.
