Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham
The Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham is a Church of England diocese in the Province of York, headed by the Bishop of Southwell and Nottingham. The diocese covers all the English county of Nottinghamshire and part of South Yorkshire. It is bordered by the dioceses of Derby, Leicester, Lincoln and Sheffield. The cathedral, Southwell Minster, is in the small town of Southwell, 15 miles/24 km north of Nottingham.
History
Until 2005 the diocese was named simply after Southwell; but in February of that year the diocesan synod voted to request the name change, which was approved by the General Synod of the Church of England in July and by the Privy Council on 15 November 2005.The diocese's present territory was originally the "Archdeaconry of Nottingham" in the Diocese of York, before being moved in 1837 to the Diocese of Lincoln. On 5 February 1884 it was taken from Lincoln and united with the archdeaconry of Derby, taken from the Diocese of Lichfield, to form the new Diocese of Southwell, which covered Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. The Diocese of Derby became independent on 7 July 1927; Southwell and Nottingham is once again in the Province of York.
Bishops
The diocesan bishop is Paul Williams. He is assisted by Andy Emerton, the Bishop suffragan of Sherwood, whose See of Sherwood was created in 1965. Alternative episcopal oversight is provided by the provincial episcopal visitor, the Bishop suffragan of Beverley, Glyn Webster. He is licensed as an honorary assistant bishop of the diocese in order to facilitate his work there. Besides Webster, there are at least six retired honorary assistant bishops licensed in the diocese:- 1994–present: Ronald Milner, retired Bishop suffragan of Burnley, lives in Southwell.
- 1998–present: John Finney, retired Bishop suffragan of Pontefract, lives in South Muskham.
- 1998–present: Roy Williamson, former Bishop of Southwark and of Bradford, lives in Beeston.
- 2001–present: Martyn Jarrett, former Bishop suffragan of Beverley and Bishop suffragan of Burnley, lives in Worksop.
- Stephen Oliver, area Bishop of Stepney, retired to Averham.
- 2014–present: Richard Inwood and former acting diocesan bishop.
