Beer began posting videos on YouTube of her singing covers of popular songs in early 2012. They gained the attention of Justin Bieber, who tweeted a link to her cover of Etta James's "At Last" to his followers. This caused Beer to trend worldwide on Twitter and gain substantial media coverage. Bieber signed Beer personally to the record label to which he is signed, Island Records, and at the time was managed by Bieber's manager Scooter Braun.
Beer partnered with Monster High, and recorded a theme song for the franchise titled "We Are Monster High". On September 12, 2013, Beer released her debut single and music video called "Melodies" which was written by Peter Kelleher, Ben Kohn, Thomas Barnes and Ina Wroldsen. The video featured a guest appearance by Bieber.
Beer began work on her debut album which was slated to have pop and R&B influences, stating there "will be slow songs, sad songs, happy songs, songs about boys, and songs about being who you are. I'm making sure I'm happy with all of the songs, because if I am not happy with them, I can't expect anyone else to be, you know?" The album is believed to have been scrapped.
"Unbreakable" was the second single released by Beer. The song was released on June 17, 2014, and was written by Jessica Ashley, Evan Bogart, Heather Jeanette Miley, Matt Schwartz, Emanuel Kiriakou and Andrew Goldstein and was produced by the latter two. On February 16, 2015, it was announced that Beer was set to be a featured artist in a new single by DJs Mako titled "I Won't Let You Walk Away". Controversies

In May 2020, Beer faced backlash after she went on TikTok live to deny claims that she had gotten plastic surgery, an action which, according to users, was done in poor timing due to the ongoing George Floyd protests and Black Lives Matter movement. Beer apologized on twitter, stating that she "was in no way trying to negate or compare" to the social movements, adding that she was in support of Black Lives Matter.
In June 2020, amid the George Floyd protests, Beer was accused of performative activism and staging a photo-shoot at a Black Lives Matter protest after a video of her posing in front of a photographer on top of a car went viral. Beer later denied the claims on Twitter stating: "I have been protesting for days. this is not and never was a photo op."
In June 2020, Beer faced backlash after an Instagram live clip of her stating that she "definitely" romanticized the 1995 novel, Lolita and it was her favorite book, went viral. In response, Twitter users trended a #MadisonBeerIsOverParty hashtag on the platform. Beer clarified her stance on the novel, tweeting: " I'd never condone pedophilia...it's a fake story and a made-up book." and referencing Hannibal Lector, with a tweet stating: "I also have said I romanticize Hannibal Lector, who plays a killer in a film... I don't romanticize KILLERS in real life. It's a fake made up thing." Beer later apologized for the statements, stating that she was "sincerely sorry" and that she "would never condone innaproproate relationships of any kind."

Personal life

In 2015, Beer was in a relationship with Jack Gilinsky from American duo Jack & Jack. Their relationship ended in 2017 when an audio of the couple fighting was leaked in which Gilinsky called Beer a "f--king slut". Gilinsky issued an apology for the audio, stating at that at the time it was recorded,"he was in a very dark place, and clearly had no control over his emotions." Beer also addressed the leak in a deleted Twitter post, stating "Many of you asking me, 'Why would you stay with him if it happened last year?' My theory was, and as horrible as this is, is that if I left him, he'd do it to the next girl. I tried to fix him." In response, Gilinksy's former duo partner, Jack Johnson, claimed Beer's statement was "fabricated" and released a Youtube video titled "The Truth, which later went viral on social media. In the video, Johnson stated that he would never "justify anything said" in the audio, however stated that the audio was heavily edited and accused Beer of helping leak the recording. In 2018, Beer began on-again, off-again relationship with Zack Bia. The couple first split that summer, and they rekindled their romance in December. They split once again in March 2019.
